lifesaver(lifebouys)

The function of lifesavers is not primarily tp be used in an emergency situationas a result of wihch ship has to be abandoned; they are provided for saving individuals in the water that are in danger of downing.
At the time ship is abandoned, lifesavers may play a part in helping to save persons that have fallen in the water and who are unable to reach lifeboat or life raft under their own power. there for, it is good idea to throw as many lifesavers in the water as possible when abandoning ship.

The number of liveshavers depends on the length of the ship. on freighters up to 100m(330ft)in length. the minimum number of lifesavers is8 for each additional 20m(165ft) 2 lifesavers to be added. on passanger ships up to 60m(200ft) in the length, the minimum number of lifesavers is 8.up to 120m(400ft),the minimum number of lifesavers is 12,and each additional 60m(200ft),6lifesavers have to be added
.

The lifesavers must be divided equally between both sides of the ship and as much as practical should be available on all open decks that run along either side of the ship they must be in a position to be readily loosened and thrown and should not be fastened in any permanent manner.<
style="font-size:100%;">on each site of the ship at least one lifesavers must be equipped with floating life line of the following specification:

-a length of at least twice the height above the waterline,or 30m(100ft)which ever is longer.
-a diameter of not less than 8mm(abt5/16").
-a breaking strength of not at less than 5Kn.

At least half the number of lifesavers must be equipped with self-ingniting lights that:
-cannot be extinguished by water.
-can burn continously in all directions from the upper part of the bulb with a caddle power of at least 2cd.
-are equipped with a power source that can provide the above candle power for a least 2hours.
-can withstand a fall into the water from a height of 30m(100ft).

At least 2 lifesavers must be equipped self igniting lights and self igniting smoke signals that can be quickly disconnected from the bridge. self igniting signal must be able to:
-emit smoke of a well-visible color with steadu intensity while floating in calm water during at leas 15minutes;
-not ignite explosively and not produce flames;
-continue to emit smoke after submersion for 10 seconds;
-be able to withstand a fall into the water from a height of 30m.

On each lifesavers the name of the ship and its home port must be clearly marked in block letters
Each lifesavers must have:
1. an outer diameter of not more than 800mm(32') and inner diameter of not less than 400mm.
2. be made of a composition of approved flotation materials;
3. the capacity to carry a load of at least 14,5kg(32lbs) during periode of 24 hours, in fresh water;
4. a weight at least 2.5kg(5.5lbs);
5, the ability not to burn/melt after having been fully involved in flame for a period of 2 sconds;
6. the ability to withstand a fall into water from height of 30m;
7. a weight of 4kg(8.8lbs) when intended for use with the quick uncoupling mechanisms;
8. grab lines of 9.5mm in diameter (3/8"), with a length of at least 4 times the outer diameter of a lifesavers. the grab lines must be fastened at 4 equidistant points on outside of the lifesavers.
