In recent years it has become increasingly more obvious, that when persons are in the water, the cold temperature of the water is as far greater menace than the danger of drowning. Even after a relatively short stay in cold water, a super cooled condition of the body may result, wich can fatal.

In open boat and even in covered raft, cold can be life threatning. survival suits offer reasonable protection.in view of teh great diferrences in design, it is necessary to consult care fully the direction for use.

Survival suits must meet the following requirements:

The survival suit must be made of watertight material in such a manner that :

1. it can be unpacked and put on without assistance in 2 minutes or less, taking into consideration partial (under) clothing and a life belt in case the survival suit is worn on conjunction with a life belt:

2. it will not continue to burn or melt after having been fully involved in fire for 2scd;

3,The whole body, with exception of the face,shall be covered. the hands must also be covered unless permanently attached gloves are present;
4.there should be provisions to realease or reduce the free water entering the suit following a jump in the water a height of at least 4.5m(15ft).

The wearer of a survival suit and a life belt should be able to:

1.climb and descent a vertical ladder of 5 m(16,5ft) in length;
2.carry out normal duties while abandoning ship;
3.jump from a height of at least 4.5m(15ft)without loosening or damaging the survival suit or injuring the water;
4.swim a short distance and to climb onto main rescue equipment.

A survival suit also meets the requirements of a life belt can be considered a life belt.
A survival suit having a bouyancy and design to be worn without a life belt must be equiped with a light and a whistle.

In case the survival unit must be worn in conjuction with the life boat, the life belt must be worn over the survival suit.
someone who wears such a survival suit must be able to put on the life belt without assistance.

A survival suit must offer its wearer sufficient thermal insulation after jumping into the water from a height 15 ft.
the body temperature of the wearer may thereafter not diminish more than 2 degree c. during a periode of 6 hours of immersion in curculating water having a temperature of the between 0 dgre and 2dgree

The survival suit must enable its wearer to hol a pencil and to write with the hands covered, after having been in water with a 5 dgr c(41 F) temperature, for the periode of 1 hour

The persons wearing a survival suit must be able to turn arround in the water from a position of face down to a position of face up within 5seconds.
